How does data visualization relate to your field of expertise?
Data visualization is a main component of my coral reef research. I use computer vision technologies to create 3D reconstructions of coral reefs. Visualizing the reefs in this manner provides a powerful tool for understanding habitat dynamics and changes occurring due to disturbances. Utilizing data visualization technologies provides an array of tools that can improve our understanding of coral biology and ecology.
What is the best thing about teaching data visualization?
I teach this course because I am passionate about the importance of data visualization for all science fields. Data visualization enhances the ability of scientists to present and share their research findings and can be a vital research tool itself. I hope to share what I have learned and used professionally with the students to help their careers develop.

How does data visualization relate to your field of expertise?
As an artist, visualization is a key element in my field. My creative process involves expressing ideas through various forms of visual representation. Artists can bring a fresh perspective of this creative process to data visualization projects.
What is the best thing about teaching data visualization?
It is important to me that everyone have grounding in the arts. After all, creativity is one of the ultimate expressions of humanity. Teaching this collaborative course that involves the arts and the sciences provides a platform for art students to share their creative process in the development of data-driven projects. Furthermore, the experience also provides an opportunity for art students to learn more about scientific inquiry and analysis as well as cutting edge technology used in digital visualization platforms.

How does data visualization relate to your field of expertise?
My research has focused on pattern recognition and machine/deep learning, social computing as well as algorithms and computing for biomedical research. My research in this direction includes feature extraction and selection, classification, object recognition, and robust machine learning from high-dimensional and/or large scale dataset. Data visualization delivered by computer-based visualization systems can help me to convey my research results effectively to different users.
What is the best thing about teaching data visualization?
Data visualization is becoming an important topic in many disciplines which open employment opportunities for many students. I am always passionate to teach our students new algorithms and methods. Therefore, it is very natural for me to extend my teaching expertise to cover visualization as well. I like to see our students to master the techniques and algorithms for creating effective visualizations based on principles such as visual art and perceptual psychology. In addition, many life skills, includes critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, time management, and communication skills necessary for professional success are woven into this course.
